This week: Write for Cloud-Native brings you "Understanding Kubernetes Objects", by David Essien. Also, our first $100 donation to fight COVID-19 👊

Hey ,

This week, our Magalix Community Expert, David Essien, brings you Understanding Kubernetes Objects.

In addition, we made our first $100 donation to COVID-19 Relief, as we're matching every payment to our community experts with donations to GiveDirectly 👇

We're in the process of setting up a dashboard that will make all of our donations and tracking transparent for the community, but in the meantime, we will document our (and your!) contributions to this effort.

If you'd like to level up the cloud-native community's knowledge while supporting a great cause, apply to Write for Cloud-Native today. Thanks for reading!

Understanding Kubernetes Objects - Final Review

Understanding Kubernetes Objects

In this article, we’ll be exploring various Kubernetes objects in order to understand what they’re used for and the different options they give you. This article doesn’t go into every detail of objects, that would be way too much to cover in one article. However, after reading the article, you’ll have a clear understanding of objects, know when to use each, and their respective perks.

Helping Communities Affected by COVID-19 Directly - Expanding the Magalix Write for Cloud-Native Program's Impact and Payout

At Magalix, our teams are based in Seattle, WA, and Cairo, Egypt, both areas that are now under lockdown, facing the consequences of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. In our day-to-day, we’re not directly contributing to relief efforts outside of social distancing in our own communities. This moment has called for some reflection from us - what can we all do as a team to aid in relief efforts?

How to patch a running Kubernetes pod

Kubernetes is one of the most powerful and flexible container cluster managers on the market. With this tool you can do almost anything you need. One such ability Kubernetes offers is the ability to patch an already-deployed pod. Say, for example, you have a pod deployed which includes an NGINX container, but want to then later add regis and MySQL containers into the mix. Instead of taking it all down and retooling your configuration files, you could simply run a patch command to add the new containers. I'm going to show you how to do just that. Although this example will be fairly rudimentary, it'll demonstrate how the patch option works with the kubectl command.

Service Mesh Adds Security, Observability and Traffic Control to Kubernetes

As we explore all the tools and additional infrastructure layers that complement Kubernetes, it’s important to remember: None of this is to imply that Kubernetes is lacking. Kubernetes is a powerful tool to dramatically simplify running containerized applications, but there are many things that it was simply never intended to do. Service meshes are an example of a complementary piece of the infrastructure, handling things that Kubernetes can not and was never intended to do.

Go serverless: Containers with Kubernetes and virtual nodes (VIDEO)

Think serverless is just for functions? Think again! Brendan Burns joins Donovan Brown to look at how serverless containers can provide a cloud-native container experience without the worry of a server or operating system. They also look at how this integrates with the Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

Top 7 Kubernetes Security Practices Everyone Should Follow

Kubernetes is the Greek word for helmsman or pilot. It is now accelerating the digital transformation at firms by helping them transition away from legacy technology and embrace cloud-native software development. The recent KubeCon event had a gathering of more than 12,000 developers and executives from around the world in San Diego. Every company wants to take advantage of Kubernetes and its ability to automatically deploy, manage, and scale software workloads in the cloud.
